Alternative Break Atlanta
Winter 2009 - Spring 2010

Placing volunteers where they are needed most

Although the damage reports are still coming in it is clear the flooding in Georgia will require a long term recovery effort. Early estimates are that at least 5,000 families throughout metro Atlanta have lost homes and belongings because of flooding. That number may rise. That number may rise, but our city was not prepared for such a disaster. With just around 10% of flood victims having flood insurance, Atlanta's homelessness problem, which was on the rise prior to the disaster will only get worse.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the floods were a "once in 500 years flood," meaning the odds of such a thing happening are less "than 0.2 percent in any given year." "It is epic!" said Brian McCallum, assistant director for the USGS Water Science Center in Georgia. "The USGS can reliably say just how bad these floods were."
